We are John & Stella Matheny and family. We moved to Greenville, Virginia in early 2002. After trying several new adventures, including raising Nubian dairy goats (for whom Nu-Beginning Farm is named), we settled on vegetables and baking. The dairy goats had to be sold when we found out we were in violation of zoning codes for Augusta County.
So in the Spring of 2003 we started doing Farmers' Markets. We started with one market selling surplus vegetables from our garden. Now we do three markets as well as doing a CSA partnership with a friend. Our product line has grown to include chemical free vegetables, bedding plants, flowers, baked goods, hand made soaps and bath salts and jams. We are also planning on starting "Homesteading Classes" in the spring of 2010.
With all the growth we make sure to never sacrifice quality. "Sell the best and eat the rest" is the motto we work by. We also strive to keep our operation completely family owned and operated. We do have various interns throughout the year, but the bulk of our work is done completely by family members. Some even get paid!
Even though we are only a three acre homestead, we support and promote family farming, believing our Country's future lies with small family farms. If you eat...you're involved in agriculture. That's a very sobering thought when you consider the amount of farm land we're losing to sub divisions, urban sprawl and commercial growth. It actually comes to about 2 acres per minute according to some studies.
